Shelly was born and raised in Mt. Pleasant. She left town to go to MSU in 1990, and after graduating with a B.S. in Psychology, she headed out west where she met her husband, who was also born and raised in Mt. Pleasant! They decided to return to Mt. Pleasant in 1996 so she could pursue an additional degree in elementary special education and her husband could work at his family’s business. When their youngest son was around 2 years old, a couple of her friends with similarly aged children started brainstorming a hands-on museum for the community. The group of 3 quickly grew to a board of 7, then more. They spent many hours over 4 years and with the generous support of many local donors, including especially the Morey Foundation, the MPDM opened its doors in December 2012. Shelly took a break from the board in 2014 and returned in 2017. She currently serves as board chair and sits on the executive and development committees. Additionally, she is on the Isabella County Human Rights Committee, the Women’s Initiative of the MPACF, and on the newly formed Mid Michigan Business and Community Sustainability Partnership (MMBCSP), and occasionally volunteers at HATS with her kids. Her favorite things to do are to spend time with her family, relax with her pets, garden, do yoga, walk, and read as much as possible.
